What the licence covers

The register records one licensed activity for MKX: Broker-Dealer Services. The licence condition reads: "Permitted to serve Institutional Investors, Qualified Investors and Retail Investors." MKX may therefore deal with all three classes of client under reference VL/25/04/001.

MKX's terms describe what it does as a broker-dealer: a digital asset exchange service, through which clients buy and sell virtual assets, and OTC trading through an OTC desk. They also describe a hosted Digital Asset Wallet and a Client Money Account. How assets and dirhams are held is on the page about custody and client money.

What the licence does not cover

VARA identifies eight virtual asset activities, and MKX's entry lists one of them. The other seven, from Advisory Services and Custody Services to VA Issuance Category 1, are not on it, so the licence should not be read as covering them. For custody, the MKX terms name Fireblocks as the Wallet Custody Services Provider.

The licence is not a protection scheme. The MKX terms state: "Clients' Virtual Assets and Fiat Assets are not covered by any deposit protection mechanism from MKX." Nor is the register entry an endorsement of any virtual asset or of its price: it records an activity, a condition and a status.

How to verify MKX on the VARA register

Three steps. Do them before you send money to any firm that says it holds a Dubai licence.

  1. 1 Open the entry on vara.ae

Use the link in the table above, or search the VARA public register for "MKX". Check that the address bar shows www.vara.ae.

  2. 2 Compare four fields

The VASP name is MKX Virtual Assets Broker & Dealer Services L.L.C. The reference is VL/25/04/001. The website URL is https://www.mkx.ae/. The status is Active.

  3. 3 Read the licence type and the activity

The licence type should read VASP Licence and the activity Broker-Dealer Services. The register also lists firms that hold only an In-Principle Approval, and those firms may not serve clients until they hold a full VASP licence.

The same method works for any firm, and it is set out in full in VARA licences explained.

VARA risk disclaimer
